RoughRiders win a pair of games at USHL’s Fall Classic

CEDAR RAPIDS- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defeated the Omaha Lancers today at the Dick’s Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic by a score of 4-1.  Cedar Rapids finished the event going 2-0.  The RoughRiders defeated the Youngstown Phantoms yesterday by a score of 6-2. 

Friday, Tyler Rollwagen got the RoughRiders on the board just 7:08 into the game while on the power play.  Jack Millar scored the eventual game winner on a shot from the point giving the Riders a 2-1 lead heading to 1st intermission.  Another RoughRiders power play goal in the 2nd period, this one scored by Ben Meehan, along with a goal by Nate Hanley gave the Riders a 4-1 lead heading to the final period.  Goaltender Shamil Shmakov, acquired this past week from the Lincoln Stars, stopped 30 of 31 shots in his RoughRiders debut for the win.  Shmakov, a native of Moscow, Russia who stands 6 feet 8 inches tall, was drafted in the 2018 NHL draft by the Colorado Avalanche.     

The event took place in Cranberry Township, PA – just outside of Pittsburgh.  It is the 4th season the event has been held at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. 

Thursday the RoughRiders got 1st period goals from Donte Lawson, Meehan (PP) and Robby Newton to give the Riders an early 3-0 lead on the Phantoms.  Newton scored his 2nd of the game in the 2nd period as the Riders took a 4-1 lead into the 3rd period.  Newton completed the hat trick just 1:50 into the 3rd period and Jack O’Leary made it 6-1.  The Phantoms got a late goal to set the final at 6-2.  Harvard commit Derek Mullahy stopped 27 of 29 shots for the win in goal. 

"Good weekend for the team," said RoughRiders head coach and team president Mark Carlson.  "Saw positive things and learned more about what we need to work on.  We like the character of our group."  

The RoughRiders open their home schedule for 2019-2020 season on Friday October 4th and Saturday, October 5th when they host the USA Hockey National Development under 17 team.  The RoughRiders eliminated Team USA last season in the 1st round of the Clark Cup playoffs.  Friday, October 4th is Cost Cutters magnetic schedule giveaway as the 1st 1,000 fans in the door will receive a free magnetic schedule courtesy of Cost Cutters.  Saturday, the RoughRiders will host a tailgate party across the street from the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena at The Stadium Lounge.  The tailgate party will go from 4 pm to 6:30 pm and the team will be giving away a team signed jersey and other prizes at the event.  For more information call the RoughRiders Front Office at 319-247-0340 or to purchase tickets online, go to
