Diversity Promos Community Difference Makers

Tanya Heintz

There are some pretty amazing people in our community and once again we honor another! Congratulations to Tanya Heintz who Fridays recipient of Diversity Promos Difference Maker in the Community award! Tanya Heintz has been collecting books in memory of her daughter, Tiffany, who passed away in a car accident when she was a senior in High School. Tiffany loved reading books to her sister. Tanya, with the help of her family and friends began donating books to St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids. As the books are delivered, children who are visiting someone or staying in the hospital are invited to take a book home with them. Each book has a label with a picture of Tiffany and the name of the person who donated the book. She felt this was a great way to honor Tiffany. In just shy of 20 years, they have donated over 10,000 books to the hospital!!! Your dedication to our community goes above and beyond. THANK YOU just isn't big enough! Tanya Heintz

Dr. Tom Novak

Once again, we celebrate another amazing citizen whose heart is as big as this city, congratulations to Dr. Tom Novak. Tom Novak is a graduate of Kennedy High School and the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He has practiced family medicine in West Branch, Iowa for over 30 years, serving families across generations. Tom is also a dedicated community member, sharing his gifts through a number of community service projects––including fifteen years of service work with Rotary, street outreach with Iowans at risk of drug overdose, and medical mission trips to provide surgery for children with cleft lip and palate in the highlands of Guatemala.
One of Tom's most recent projects has been to offer free foot care to the guests at the Iowa City Catholic Worker House. The guests, many of whom sleep outside or lack health care, enjoy a bubble bath foot soak, foot massage, and clinical care for calluses, wounds and other ailments.
Throughout his life Dr. Novak has exemplified a spirit of love and care for his neighbors, and is an example for all of us.
