Robin Bergman broke a 2-2 third period tie and the host RoughRiders went on to clinch a berth in the United States Hockey League’s Clark Cup playoffs with a 4-2 win over the Indiana Ice Friday night.
This marks the eighth straight year that the Riders have qualified for the postseason.
The Riders were on the power play when Bergman snapped a 2-2 tie with a one timer from the slot at 13:58
of the third.
Two minutes and twenty-two seconds later Doug Jones jammed in an insurance goal from the doorstep.
The Riders had twice taken the lead earlier on in the evening only for the Ice to rally to tie the score on both occasions.
The Riders jumped in front 1-0 when Dean Chelios buried a rebound at 9:43 of the first period.
Just 1:07 into the second period Ben Cramer’s shorthanded goal knotted the game up at one apiece.
The Riders moved back on top while on the man advantage when Casey Wellman (one goal, two assists) converted a Kyle Flanagan goalmouth feed at 15:23 of the second.
The Ice responded again with just 1:34 left in the period when Patrick Cullen swept the puck past Rider goaltender Brady Hjelle from the slot, but it would be the Riders who took over in the third.
