RoughRiders’ Ricci Named Let’s Play Hockey/USHL Offensive Player of the Week

January 24, 2005- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders center Rob Ricci has been named the Let’s Play Hockey/United States Hockey League Offensive Player of the Week.

Ricci, the Riders’ captain, earned the honor after scoring four goals in the Riders’ two wins over the Green Bay Gamblers last week.

“Rob has shown tremendous leadership and determination all season. His work ethic is second to none,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “He’s a guy who is not afraid to do what it takes to win, whether it’s finding a way to score a big goal or getting his nose dirty in the corners.”

Ricci scored two goals, including the game winner just 17 seconds into the third period, in a 4-3 home victory over the Gamblers last Wednesday. Two nights later in Green Bay, Ricci delivered again in the third period. The 20-year old scored the game-tying and game winning power play goals as the Riders came from behind to defeat the Gamblers 3-1. Ricci has now scored the game winning goal in each of the Riders’ last three victories.

In addition to his standout performance on the ice, last week Ricci also committed to Merrimack College for next season.

So far this season, Ricci (13-21-34) is the Riders’ second leading point-scorer. The Brampton, Ontario native is also tied for second in the United States Hockey League in game winning goals (5). This is Ricci’s second year with the Riders.

Ricci’s goals last Friday also helped the Riders tie the league record for longest single season road winning streak. With that victory in Green Bay, the Riders have now won eleven straight away games, matching the mark set by the 1986-87 Rochester Mustangs.

This is the second time this season Ricci has been named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week. He also took home the award on November 16. This also marks the second consecutive week a Rider has been honored by the USHL. Goaltender Dan Tormey was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week last week.

Ricci and the league-leading RoughRiders (28-5-3, 59 points) return to action with a pair of home games this weekend. The Riders will host the Indiana Ice Friday night and the Sioux Falls Stampede Saturday evening. Both games face off at 7:05PM.

This Friday is “Guns & Hoses Night” as the Riders will honor area law enforcement officers and fire fighters during their game against the Ice. The Riders will wear special limited edition “Guns & Hoses” jerseys during the game. The jerseys will go up for bid in a live auction immediately following the game. Half of auction proceeds will go to the Cedar Rapids Police Department’s charity of choice, the other half to a charity chosen by the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.

This Friday is also a Family Pack Night. The Family Pack enables fans to purchase four green zone seats, four hot dogs, four fountain drinks and a game program all for just $44. The Family Pack is available for all of the RoughRiders’ Friday and Sunday home games.

This Saturday is another NASCAR-themed night at the ice arena as the Jeff Gordon #24 DuPont Car arrives in Cedar Rapids. Fans can sidle up to the retired #24 car before and during the Riders’ game against the Stampede.

Tickets for this weekend’s games and all remaining RoughRiders home dates are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or in person at the ice arena. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days. Ticket prices range from $8.00 to $17.00 including a 50-cent facility fee.
| Posted on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 (Archive on Tuesday, January 25, 2005)
