RoughRiders’ Tormey Named Let’s Play Hockey/USHL Defensive Player of the Week

January 18, 2005- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders goaltender Dan Tormey has been named Let’s Play Hockey/United States Hockey League Defensive Player of the Week.

Tormey, 19, earned the honor after making 29 saves in a 6-0 shutout of the Waterloo Black Hawks last Saturday night at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

“Dan has been battling and competing hard for us every night,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “He did a great job for us Saturday night just as he has thoughout the season.”

Saturday’s win enabled the Riders to clinch the i wireless Corridor Cup, the trophy awarded to the winner of the Cedar Rapids-Waterloo season series.

Tormey has gone 13-1-1 in 16 games this season. The second year Rider leads the USHL in goals against average (1.92) and save percentage (.933) and is tied for second in shutouts.

Tormey started the season by going unbeaten in regulation (11-0-1) in his first 12 decisions to set a new club record. Tormey’s most recent performances have been no less impressive. The Syracuse, New York, native has allowed one or no goals in five of his last six games and has given up two goals or fewer in ten of his last 11 outings.

The Riders acquired Tormey in a December, 2003 trade with the Des Moines Buccaneers. Tormey went 4-6 with a 2.66 goals against average and a .921 save percentage in 12 games after joining the Riders last season. He played a total of 23 games between Cedar Rapids and Des Moines last year and posted an overall record of 10-13 while turning in a 3.11 goals against average and a .913 save percentage. Tormey began his USHL career in 2002-03 with the River City Lancers.

Tormey and the league-leading RoughRiders (26-4-3, 55 points) return to action with three games this week. The Riders will host the Green Bay Gamblers tomorrow night at 7:05. That game was originally scheduled for Thursday, January 6, but was postponed because of snow. Tickets for the January 6 game will be honored tomorrow night. The Riders will visit Green Bay for a rematch with the Gamblers Friday evening before returning home to take on the Chicago Steel Saturday evening at 7:05.

The clash between the Riders and Steel will cap off a RoughRider/Hawkeye hockey double header Saturday. Before the Riders hit the ice, fans will first have a chance to cheer on the Hawkeyes as the University of Iowa men’s hockey team faces off against the University of Northern Iowa at 4:05PM at the ice arena.

Tickets for this week’s games and all remaining RoughRiders home dates are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or in person at the ice arena. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days.
