Game Summary: January 14- RoughRiders 3 Waterloo 2 (ot)

Alec Martinez scored with 47 seconds left in overtime to give the RoughRiders a 3-2 win over the host Waterloo Black Hawks Friday night.

The win was the Riders’ third straight and improved Cedar Rapids to 9-1 in its last ten games and 18-1-2 in its last 21.

Waterloo did pickup one point for the overtime loss.

Martinez buried a Shane Lovdahl centering pass from the doorstep after the Riders pinned down the Black Hawks with dogged forechecking work from Jordan Pietrus and Jon Grabarek.

The Riders needed overtime to earn the win after a back-and-forth third period saw Cedar Rapids turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead only for Waterloo to rebound and tie the score.

The Riders got on the scoreboard for the first time when Justin Abdelkader beat Waterloo goaltender Joe Grossman on the short side with a wrist shot from the right wing circle at 10:19.

Just over two minutes later the Riders took their first lead of the night. Matt Vokes charged down the left wing and into the goalmouth only to be stopped by Grossman, but Jordan Pietrus buried the rebound to make it 2-1 at 12:25.

The Riders’ lead would last just 2:20 before David Meckler’s power play goal deadlocked the game again. Meckler shoveled home a rebound from the goalmouth to set the stage for overtime.

The Hawks also scored the game’s first goal on the power play when Garrett Regan swept home a rebound just 42 seconds into the second period.

The Riders’ Alex Stalock made 28 saves to earn the win in goal.
