RoughRiders Bid to Clinch i wireless Corridor Cup This Weekend

January 12, 2005- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders can clinch the i wireless Corridor Cup with a sweep of their home-and-home series with the Waterloo Black Hawks this weekend. The Riders will visit Waterloo Friday night before hosting the Black Hawks Saturday evening at 7:05.

The i wireless Corridor Cup is awarded to the winner of the Cedar Rapids-Waterloo regular season series. The Riders are bidding to bring the Corridor Cup back to Cedar Rapids for the first time since 2002 after the Black Hawks took home the trophy each of the last two seasons.

The Riders have won each of this season’s first three meetings between the I-380 rivals. The Riders defeated the Black Hawks at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena 4-1 on October 16 and 6-2 on November 24. The Riders also edged the Hawks 2-1 in a shootout on Thanksgiving night- November 25- in Waterloo.

The Riders have earned six points in the standings for their three wins over the Hawks. Waterloo has picked up one point against the Riders as a result of the shootout defeat. As the two clubs will meet a total of eight times this season, a pair of Riders wins this weekend would give Cedar Rapids ten points in the season series and mathematically guarantee the Riders possession of the Corridor Cup.

Since the inauguration of the i wireless Corridor Cup series in 1999-2000, the RoughRiders have gone 15-15-4 in 34 games with the Black Hawks. The Riders have posted a 9-6-2 home record against the Hawks and have gone 6-9-2 in Waterloo. The Riders have twice before won the Corridor Cup- in 2000-01 and 2001-02.

The RoughRiders (24-4-3, 51 points) enter this weekend in first place overall in the United States Hockey League. The Riders are 8-1 in their last nine games and have gone 17-1-2 in their last 20. The Riders lead the Omaha Lancers by three points in the race for the top spot in the league and lead the USHL’s East Division by a whopping 19 points over the second place Chicago Steel.

The Black Hawks (13-13-4, 30 points), who fell to the Tri-City Storm 3-2 in a shootout last night in Kearney, Nebraska, have suffered just one regulation defeat in their last six games. Waterloo has gone 8-5-1 in its last 14 games after starting the season 5-8-2 in its first 15 outings.

The RoughRiders will also host their January food drive Saturday. The Riders and the Cedar Rapids Jaycees are teaming up for monthly food drives to benefit the HACAP Food Reservoir. The Jaycees will collect canned food items at the RoughRiders’ first Saturday home game of each month.

Tickets for RoughRider home games- including this Saturday’s game- are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or in person at the ice arena. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days. Ticket prices range from $8.00 to $17.00 including a 50-cent facility fee.
| Posted on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 (Archive on Wednesday, January 12, 2005)
