The Riders lead the East Division by a whopping 19 points over the second place Chicago Steel. The Riders are the only team in the east with a winning record.<o:p></o:p> The Riders can clinch the i wireless Corridor Cup with a sweep of this weekend’s home-and-home series against <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:place></st1:City>. The i wireless Corridor Cup is awarded to the winner of the Cedar Rapids-Waterloo season series. The Riders have won the first three meetings between the I-380 rivals this season; the two clubs will clash a total of eight times before the end of the campaign. Two wins this weekend would be enough for the Riders to bring the cup back to <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:place></st1:City> for the first time since 2002.<o:p></o:p> The Riders won back-to-back games last weekend, defeating Tri-City 3-2 in overtime Friday and winning 2-1 in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:place></st1:City> Saturday. <o:p></o:p> The Riders were to have played three games in three nights last weekend; however the Riders’ home game against <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:place></st1:City> originally scheduled for last Thursday was postponed until Wednesday, January 19, because of snow.<o:p></o:p> With last Saturday’s victory, the Riders extended their team record-setting road winning streak to nine straight games. At <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="13" Month="2">13-2-1</st1:date> on the season, the Riders’ own the league’s best away record. <o:p></o:p> In the wake of Friday’s win, the Riders have now gone <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2002" Day="1" Month="10">10-1-2</st1:date> in their last thirteen home games.<o:p></o:p> The Riders have also now won five straight games against West Division opposition and have gone unbeaten in regulation (6-0-2) in their last eight games against the west.<o:p></o:p> Beginning this weekend, the Riders will play six straight games and ten of their next 11 against East Division foes.<o:p></o:p> Alex Stalock matched a team season high by making 42 saves last Friday. Stalock is now unbeaten in regulation (8-0-2) in his last ten games.<o:p></o:p> The Riders’ attack is both potent and well balanced. The Riders are second in the league in goals per game (3.9) and can boast 14 different players who have recorded at least ten points and ten players have notched 15 or more points.<o:p></o:p> A 5-0 shutout loss to <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Indiana</st1:place></st1:State> last Saturday ended the Waterloo Black Hawks’ season-best four game winning streak. The defeat came one night after <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:place></st1:City> downed <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:place></st1:City> 4-1.<o:p></o:p> The Black Hawks have gone 8-5 in their last 13 games after going <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2002" Day="8" Month="5">5-8-2</st1:date> in their first 15 outings.<o:p></o:p> <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:place></st1:City> has closed to within three points of second place <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> in the East Division standings despite having played four fewer games than the Steel. The Hawks will have the chance to narrow that gap to one point when they visit the Tri-City Storm tomorrow night.<o:p></o:p> The Hawks are at .500 both at home (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2003" Day="6" Month="6">6-6-3</st1:date>) and on the road (7-7).<o:p></o:p> As they are the league’s lowest scoring team, averaging just 2.2 goals per game, the Hawks have depended heavily on solid defense and goaltending this season. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:place></st1:City> ranks third in both fewest goals (2.6) and shots (27.0) allowed per game.<o:p></o:p> <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:place></st1:City>’s Drew O’Connell leads USHL goaltenders in goals against average (2.03) and ranks second in save percentage (.924).<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> ALL-STARS<o:p></o:p> Rosters for the February 8 United States Hockey League Prospects/All-Star game were announced earlier today. Four RoughRiders- forwards Justin Abdelkader, Phil Axtell, Ted Purcell and Matt Vokes- were selected to play in the game. Axtell, Purcell and Vokes will play for Team World, while Abdelkader will skate for Team USHL.<o:p></o:p> Because the RoughRiders currently lead the USHL’s East Division, Riders assistant coach Scott Meyer will serve as an assistant for Team World. <o:p></o:p> Four Black Hawks were also chosen to play in the mid-season classic. (167-129-30)<o:p></o:p> Mark Carlson has been the RoughRiders’ coach since the team arrived in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:place></st1:City> in 1999-2000. He has led the RoughRiders to four straight winning seasons and four straight berths in the Clark Cup playoffs. He earned his one hundredth coaching win on <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2003" Day="11" Month="1">January 11, 2003</st1:date> when the RoughRiders defeated the Sioux City Musketeers 3-1 in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:place></st1:City>. <o:p></o:p> He was behind the bench for his three hundredth game as RoughRiders coach as the Riders defeated <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Indiana</st1:place></st1:State> 6-5 in a shootout in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Indianapolis</st1:place></st1:City> on October 17.<o:p></o:p> Prior to taking over the RoughRiders in 1999, Carlson spent four seasons as a collegiate assistant coach at Northeastern and Massachusetts-Lowell. Last season, he piloted the Hawks to the Clark Cup title. Two seasons ago he led the Hawks to a first place finish in the East Division.<o:p></o:p> O’Handley spent seven years (1991-98) as the head coach of the North Iowa Huskies, the team that moved from <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Mason City</st1:place></st1:City> to <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:place></st1:City> to become the RoughRiders after the 1998-99 campaign. He posted a 140-187-21 record behind the Huskies bench. Prior to returning to the USHL with <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:place></st1:City>, O’Handley was an assistant coach in the pro ranks for four seasons. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> HISTORY<o:p></o:p> The Black Hawks have won the i wireless Corridor Cup each of the last two seasons. The Riders last claimed the Cup in 2001-02 and first won it in 2000-01. The Black Hawks won the first Waterloo-Cedar Rapids season series in 1999-2000.<o:p></o:p> The Riders’ current nine game road winning streak surpasses the old team record of six consecutive road wins set between November 1 and December 2 of last season.<o:p></o:p> With his second period goal last Sunday against <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:place></st1:City>, Matt Vokes became the first player in Rider history to score in five straight games. Vokes’s streak was halted when he failed to score last Friday against Tri-City.<o:p></o:p> Jon Grabarek’s team record-setting career point total now stands at 105. Next on Grabarek’s hit list is Chase Watson’s team career assists record (63). Grabarek has piled up 60 assists in two-plus seasons with the Riders.<o:p></o:p> In addition to holding the club record for consecutive games played (151), Zach Miskovic also ranks third in club history in total games (consecutive or otherwise). He is five behind Matt Olinger, who ranks second. Chris Snavely is the club record holder. Snavely played 212 regular season games in four years with the Riders.<o:p></o:p> The Riders have reached 50 points faster this season (in 31 games) than in any prior season in club history. The old club record for fewest games required to crack 50 points was set in 2001-02, when the Riders went <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2004" Day="23" Month="11">23-11-4</st1:date> in their first 38 games to total 50 points.<o:p></o:p> Last season’s Clark Cup title was the first in team history for the Black Hawks. After finishing fourth in the East Division (30-27-3, 63 points), the Black Hawks upended <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City>, <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Danville</st1:place></st1:City> and Tri-City on the way to the title. They defeated the Anderson Cup (regular season) champion Storm in four games in the finals.<o:p></o:p><
