The defeat ended a streak that had seen the Riders go unbeaten in regulation (15-0-2) in 17 straight games. The loss to the Gamblers was the Riders’ first regulation setback since a 5-1 loss to Tri-City on November 6. The defeat also ended the Riders’ six game winning streak.<o:p></o:p> Despite the loss the Riders remain in first place overall in the United States Hockey League. The Riders are three points ahead of the Omaha Lancers and have a game in hand on <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p> The Riders lead the USHL’s East Division by a whopping 15 points over the second place Chicago Steel. The Riders have two games in hand on <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place>. <o:p></o:p> Last night’s defeat came after the Riders had won their first two games following the USHL’s holiday break. The Riders dropped <st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City> 4-1 last Thursday and edged <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place> 4-3 on Friday night.<o:p></o:p> Last night’s loss also brought an end to the Riders’ team record-setting run of eleven home games (9-0-2) without a regulation defeat. The defeat also marked just the second time all season that the Riders have fallen in regulation on home ice. The Chicago Steel defeated the Riders 3-1 at the ice arena on October 23.<o:p></o:p> Dan Tormey suffered his first loss of the season yesterday. Tormey had started the season 11-0-1 to set a new team record for longest unbeaten streak by a goaltender. Dating back to his final regular season appearance last year- a 6-2 win in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:City></st1:place> on March 27- Tormey had gone a total of twelve games without a suffering regulation defeat. His last loss prior to last night came on February 27 of last season, when the Riders suffered a 5-2 set back at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place>. The loss to the Gamblers also ended Tormey’s team record-setting ten game winning streak.<o:p></o:p> Friday’s win in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place> extended the Riders’ team record-setting road winning streak to eight straight games. The Riders have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="2" Month="12">12-2-1</st1:date> away from home on the season, the best road record in the USHL.<o:p></o:p> The Riders complete a stretch of four games against East Division opposition when they face <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place> Thursday night. The Riders had won thirteen straight against East Division foes before last night. <o:p></o:p> The Riders are unbeaten in regulation (4-0-2) in their last six games against the West Division. <o:p></o:p> The Riders’ attack is both potent and well balanced. The Riders lead the league in goals per game (4.0) and can boast 14 different players who have recorded at least ten points and ten players have notched 15 or more points.<o:p></o:p> Matt Vokes broke a club record by scoring in a fifth straight game last night. Vokes has totaled seven goals in his last five outings.<o:p></o:p> The Riders this weekend embark on their second stretch of three games in three nights this season.<o:p></o:p> Last night’s win was the Gamblers’ first since the holiday break. <st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City> lost 3-2 Wednesday night in <st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City> and 4-2 on home ice against <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City></st1:place> Friday night. <o:p></o:p> Last night’s win came after the Gamblers had gone just <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="6" Month="1">1-6-1</st1:date> in their prior eight games. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place> has picked up points in three of its last five games (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="2" Month="2">2-2-1</st1:date>), however.<o:p></o:p> With their win over the Riders, <st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City> pulled within six points of fourth place <st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State> and the final East Division playoff spot and also moved seven points ahead of cellar-dwelling <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place>. <o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place> ranks second to last in the league in both goals scored (2.57) and goals allowed (3.97) per game.<o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place>’s special teams have likewise been a major problem. The Gamblers rank dead last in the league in both power play (9.4%) and penalty killing efficiency (75.4%).<o:p></o:p> Blake Wheeler (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2023" Day="13" Month="10">10-13-23</st1:date>) remains the Gamblers’ leading scorer. Wheeler was chosen fifth overall in June’s National Hockey League draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. He is the highest NHL draft pick to skate in the USHL following his NHL selection.<o:p></o:p> Tri-City is locked in a tight battle for the final playoff spot in the rugged West Division. The Storm is four points ahead of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:City></st1:place> in the race for fourth place. Tri-City has played two more games than the Stampede.<o:p></o:p> Tri-City went <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2000" Day="3" Month="3">3-3-0</st1:date> over a just completed stretch of six straight road games. The Storm split its first two games after returning from the break. Tri-City shutout <st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City> 5-0 Friday before falling 6-3 at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place> Saturday.<o:p></o:p> Jaroslav Markovic (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2025" Day="14" Month="11">11-14-25</st1:date>) and Christian Hanson (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2025" Day="16" Month="9">9-16-25</st1:date>) are tied for the Tri-City point-scoring lead, while J.P. Platisha (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2023" Day="11" Month="12">12-11-23</st1:date>) leads the team in goals.<o:p></o:p> The Storm has consistently limited opponents’ scoring chances, allowing a league low average of 22.3 shots per game.<o:p></o:p> Tomorrow night Tri-City plays its first home game in nearly a month as <st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City> visits <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Kearney</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">Nebraska</st1:State></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p> The Stars’ 3-1 loss last Saturday night in <st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City> ended <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City></st1:place>’s season-best six game winning streak. The defeat was the Stars’ first since December 3.<o:p></o:p> The loss to the Steel came one night after a 4-2 win in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p> Dan Reidel is the Stars’ offensive catalyst. Reidel (13-21-34) is second in the league in assists and is tied for fifth in points. Jared Boll (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2028" Day="17" Month="11">17-11-28</st1:date>) is tied for third in the league in goals and is tied for tenth in points.<o:p></o:p> The Stars are the most penalized team in the league. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City></st1:place> is assessed an average of 31.5 minutes in penalties per game. The Stars are the only USHL team to spend over 30 minute per night in the box. Boll leads the league in penalty minutes (174), while teammate Ryan Hohl ranks fourth (141). The Riders had tied the game at three with another power play goal- this one from Justin Abdelkader- in the final minute of the second period.
