RoughRiders Unbeaten in Regulation in Team Record 11 Straight Home Games

December 31, 2004- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders set a new team record for most consecutive home games- 11- without a regulation loss with a 4-1 win over the Chicago Steel last night at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The Riders have gone 9-0-2 on home ice during their record-setting run.

In addition, Dan Tormey made 35 saves in last night’s game to earn his tenth consecutive victory and break the club record for longest winning streak by a goaltender.

The Riders’ current home unbeaten streak surpasses the previous team best established when Cedar Rapids went ten straight home games without a regulation defeat (7-0-3) from January 4 through February 8, 2002.

The Riders have not suffered a regulation home loss since falling to Chicago 3-1 on October 23 at the ice arena. That defeat is Riders’ only regulation home setback this season. The Riders have gone 10-1-2 in their first 13 home games.

Coach Mark Carlson’s Riders (21-3-3, 45 points) are in first place overall in the United States Hockey League, three points ahead of the Omaha Lancers, on whom the Riders have two games in hand. The Riders lead the USHL’s East Division by a whopping 15 points over the second place Steel.

Last night’s record-breaking win was the latest in a series of milestones the Riders have reached this season. Most notably, the Riders have now gone 16 straight games overall without suffering a regulation loss. They have posted a 14-0-2 record during that run, shattering the old club record of ten consecutive games without a regulation defeat set last season.

Tormey’s winning streak breaks a team record set last season by Joe Fallon, who won nine straight games between November 7 and December 2, 2003. The last time Tormey did not end up in the win column was on October 8, when he was in goal for a 5-4 shootout loss in Lincoln.

Tormey (11-0-1), who has not yet suffered a regulation loss this season, broke the old club record for longest unbeaten streak by a goalie (nine games) earlier this month. Dating back to his final regular season appearance last year- a 6-2 win in Sioux Falls on March 27- Tormey has gone a total of thirteen games without a suffering regulation defeat. His last loss in regulation came on February 27 of last season, when the Riders suffered a 5-2 set back at Sioux City.

On the season, Tormey leads the USHL in goals against average (1.98) and save percentage (.931). The 20-year old Syracuse native is also tied for second in the league in shutouts (2) and tied for fourth in wins.

The Riders originally acquired Tormey exactly one year ago in a trade with the Des Moines Buccaneers. The third year netminder started his USHL career with the River City Lancers in 2002-03.

The Riders will try to extend yet another team record run- a seven game road winning streak- when they take on one of Tormey’s former clubs, the Bucs, tonight at 7:35 in Des Moines. The last time the two teams met, on December 17 in Cedar Rapids, the Riders matched the team single game goal scoring record in a 9-1 rout of the Bucs.

The Riders are next in action on home ice Sunday afternoon at 4:05 when the Green Bay Gamblers visit the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. Kids’ tickets to Sunday’s game cost just $5. The reduced ticket price is available to children 12-and-under for all seats. After Sunday’s game fans will also have a chance to take to the ice themselves and skate with the RoughRiders.

Sunday is also a family pack day. Fans can get four green zone seats, four hot dogs, four fountain drinks and a game program all for just $44. The Family Pack is available for all of the RoughRiders’ Friday and Sunday home games.

Tickets for Sunday’s game- and the rest of the RoughRiders’ remaining home games- are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or in person at the ice arena. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days. Ticket prices range from $8.00 to $17.00 including a 50-cent facility fee.
