Game Summary: December 30, 2004- RoughRiders 4 Chicago 1

The United States Hockey League’s holiday break did little to cool off the white hot Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, who returned to action for the first time since December 18 with a 4-1 win over the Chicago Steel Thursday night at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

With the victory, the Riders are now unbeaten in regulation (14-0-2) in their last 16 games, a team record. The Riders established another new club record by extending their home unbeaten streak to 11 games (9-0-2).

Dan Tormey made 35 saves to extend his personal winning streak to ten games, a new record for a Rider goaltender. The Riders did show signs of rust early on as the Steel created more scoring chances in the opening moments, but Tormey was superb from the start, making 15 saves in the first period alone.

Rob Ricci roused the Riders when he scored the opening goal- the first of his two on the night- at 11:52 of the first. With Cedar Rapids on the power play, Ricci charged down the slot and swept the puck under Chicago goaltender Shane Connelly.

The lead would last just over two minutes before Matt Clackson buried a centering feed from his younger brother Chris to tie the score at one 13:58 into the game.

Matt Vokes put the Riders back on top for good with just 1:26 remaining in the first. Vokes snapped the puck home from the right wing circle to give the Riders a 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless second period, Greg Collins provided some insurance for the Riders at the 3:55 mark of the third. After Connelly made a fine stop on Brandon Svendsen’s breakaway bid, Collins- whose lead pass had sent Svendsen in alone in the first place- tucked the rebound over the goal line to extend the lead to 3-1.

With a minute and a half left in the game, the Steel pulled Connelly, emptying the next to bring on an extra attacker, but the gamble backfired on Chicago coach Will Nichol as Ricci finished off the Steel with an empty net goal in the final minute. Ricci buried a Collins lay off from the slot to cap the evening for the Riders.
