Indiana Rallies Past RoughRiders 6-4

The Indiana Ice scored six unanswered goals after falling behind 4-0 in the first period to upend the host RoughRiders 6-4 Friday night.

John Carlson scored what would prove to be the game winning goal, blasting the puck home from the top of the right wing circle to snap a 4-4 tie at 5:04 of the third period. John Kemp’s close range backhander capped off the Ice rally at 15:16 of the third.

The Ice got back up off the deck after surrendering four goals in the first 12:14 of the game and replacing starting goaltender Scott Darling with Matt Hoyle. At 16:15 of the first period Jack Skjodt (two goals, one assist) triggered the Indiana comeback by burying a rebound for the first of three straight Ice power play goals.

The Ice would even the score in the second period by scoring three times in seven minutes and 11 seconds. Ben Blood scored from the doorstep to narrow the gap to 4-2 at 11:04 of the second. Indiana pulled within one when Skjodt tipped in his second goal of the night at 16:28 of the middle frame. Will MacDonald evened the score at four and provided the Ice’s first even strength goal of the game with a fine solo rush at the 18:45 mark of the second.

Early on it seemed the game would take a much different course as it was the Riders who ripped off three straight power play goals in the first period. Cedar Rapids was up 5-on-3 when Ben Lynch opened the scoring with a wrist shot from the slot four minutes into the contest. At 7:17 Casey Wellman doubled the lead by finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing play from the goalmouth. The margin stretched to 3-0 at 9:59 when Mike Seidel converted a cross-crease pass from Lynch. David Boehm scored the Riders’ only even strength goal of the evening at 12:14 of the first. Boehm fired in a Seidel centering feed to seemingly put the Riders in complete control only for Cedar Rapids to endure a remarkable reversal of fortune.
