Kent Patterson made 36 saves to backstop the RoughRiders to a 4-2 win over the host Lincoln Stars Saturday night.
A strong start propelled Cedar Rapids- the Riders jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Robin Bergman opened the scoring six minutes into game by tipping in a Doug Jones feed. The Riders doubled the lead while on the power play when Matt Donovan blasted the puck home at 16:37 of the first.
Both teams scored twice in a wild six minute four second stretch in the second period. Ben Lynch snapped a wrist shot past Lincoln goaltender David Reekie at 5:18 of the second to extend the lead to three. The Stars bounced back to get on the scoredboard for the first time just 55 seconds later when Jason Gregoire backhanded the puck home from the high slot. At 8:43 Rick Carden’s tip-in cut the Rider lead to 3-2. Casey Wellman halted the Stars’ momentum and- as it would prove- provided the final margin with a shorthanded breakaway goal at 11:22 of the second.
