Former Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defenseman Alec Martinez, now a junior at Miami of Ohio, has been named to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association All-Conference First Team, while former Rider forward Jacob Cepis, a freshman at Bowling Green, has been named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team.
Martinez, 20, has scored seven goals and totaled 26 points in 36 games this season. The Rochester, Michigan, native finished the regular season ranked second among CCHA defensemen in point scoring. Martinez has helped fourth ranked Miami (29-6-1 overall, 21-6-1 conference) to a second place finish in the CCHA. The Red Hawks will host Bowling Green in the CCHA tournament quarterfinals this weekend.
In 117 career collegiate games Martinez has scored 19 goals and collected 61 points.
Martinez won the United States Hockey League Clark Cup title with the RoughRiders in 2004-05. He scored ten goals and collected 21 points in 58 games in what was his only season in Cedar Rapids.
Last June Martinez was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round of the National Hockey League Draft with the one hundred thirteenth overall pick.
Cepis, 20, is Bowling Green’s second leading goal scorer (15) and point producer (31). Cepis last Sunday scored in overtime to give BGSU a 4-3 win in the third and deciding game of the Falcons’ CCHA tournament opening round series against Lake Superior State.
Last season Cepis earned First Team All-USHL honors after leading the league in goals (34) and finishing third in points (72). In two years with the RoughRiders the Parma, Ohio, native scored 46 goals and totaled 101 points in 116 games.
The RoughRiders (28-19-3, 59 points) are in third place in the USHL’s East Division. The Riders return to action with a pair of games this weekend. The Riders will host the Sioux City Musketeers tomorrow night at 7:05 before travelling to Lincoln to take on the Stars Saturday evening.
