Omaha Drops Riders 6-2

Six different Omaha Lancers scored and Drew Palmisano made 24 saves as the host Lancers defeated the RoughRiders 6-2 Friday night.

The Lancers jumped to a 3-0 first period lead. Chris Connolly’s backhander from the slot opened the scoring 8:26 into the game. The Lancers would strike twice in 21 seconds late in the period to stretch the lead to three. Omaha was on the power play when Barry Almeida stuffed the puck in from the doorstep at 17:26. Moments later Andrew Conboy barreled into the Rider goalmouth to score the Lancers’ third.

After a scoreless second period the Lancers would extend the lead to 5-0 with a pair of goals early in the third. Matt Thurber swept the fourth Omaha goal past Cedar Rapids netminder Kent Patterson (who replaced Brady Hjelle after the first period) from the slot at 2:29 of the third. At 4:37 Aaron Lewadniuk buried a rebound to stretch the margin to five.

The Riders got on the scoreboard for the first time thanks to Mike Seidel’s power play goal at 14:01 of the third. However, just 61 seconds after Seidel converted a Doug Jones centering feed, Omaha’s Nico Sacchetti made it 6-1 with drive from the high slot. The issue was no longer in doubt when Matt Tomassoni scored the second Cedar Rapids goal on a rebound with just over four seconds left.
