The Riders won their final four games before the USHL’s holiday break kicked in ten days ago.<o:p></o:p> The Riders’ 6-5 win over the Sioux City Muskeeters on December 18- <st1:City w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:City>’ final game before the holiday break- combined with the Omaha Lancers’ loss at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:City></st1:place> the same night enabled the Riders to move one point ahead of the West Division-leading Lancers in the overall standings. The Riders, who have three games in hand on the Lancers, boast a winning percentage (.827) better than one hundred points higher than <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place>’s (.724).<o:p></o:p> The Riders lead the USHL’s East Division by a whopping 13 points over the second place Chicago Steel. The Riders have two games in hand on <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place>. <o:p></o:p> The Riders won three times in five days just before the holiday break. The Riders edged <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place> 4-3 in a shootout on December 14. The Riders then exploded for fifteen goals in their next two games. The Riders tied team records for goals and power play goals (5) in one game in their 9-1 demolition of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place> on December 17. The Riders followed up that rout with another hard fought win over <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place> the following evening.<o:p></o:p> The Riders tied the team record for longest home unbeaten streak with the December 18 victory over the Musketeers. The Riders have gone ten games (8-0-2) without a regulation home defeat since suffering their only regulation home loss of the season to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> on October 23.<o:p></o:p> Dan Tormey was in goal for the December 17 win over <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place> and has now gone 10-0-1 on the season to set a new team record for longest unbeaten streak by a goaltender. Dating back to his final regular season appearance last year- a 6-2 win in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:City></st1:place> on March 27- Tormey has gone a total of twelve games without a suffering regulation defeat. His last loss came on February 27 of last season, when the Riders suffered a 5-2 set back at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p> Tormey will have a chance to break the team record for longest winning streak by a goaltender when he makes his next appearance. He tied the old club record by picking up his ninth straight win December 17 against <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place>. <o:p></o:p> Their December 14 win in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place> extended the Riders’ road winning streak to a team record-setting seven straight games. The Riders have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="2" Month="11">11-2-1</st1:date> away from home on the season, the best road record in the USHL.<o:p></o:p> The Riders will play their next four games against East Division opposition. The Riders have won eleven straight against East Division foes since suffering their only loss of the season to an eastern opponent (also the October 23 setback against <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place>). <o:p></o:p> The Riders played four of their final five games before the break against West Division clubs. The Riders went 3-0-1 in those four games. The Riders are unbeaten in regulation (4-0-2) in their last six games against the west. <o:p></o:p> The Riders’ attack is both potent and well balanced. The Riders are the only team in the league averaging more than four goals per game (4.08), yet only one Rider- Ted Purcell, who is ninth- ranks in the top fourteen in the league in point scoring. However, 14 different Riders have recorded at least ten points so far this season and ten players have notched 14 or more points.<o:p></o:p> The Riders return to from the holiday break to face one of their busiest stretches of the season. Beginning Thursday, the Riders will play three games in four days and six games in a ten day span.<o:p></o:p> The Steel is five points ahead of the Indiana Ice in the race for second place in the East Division.<o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> closed out the pre-Christmas portion of its schedule with three games in three nights. The Steel headed into the break on an up note with a 3-1 win over <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State></st1:place> on December 19. That victory came after the Steel endured defeat each of the previous two evenings. The Steel suffered a 5-3 loss to <st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City> on December 17 and a 5-1 setback the next night in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p> The Steel has played 14 of its last 15 games against East Division opponents and will make it 16 of 17 against the east with games this week against the Riders and Waterloo Black Hawks (Friday night).<o:p></o:p> Former Rider Nate Perkovich has scored twice in seven games since making his Steel debut last month. Perkovich, who was acquired by <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> in the off-season, missed the start of the campaign due to injury.<o:p></o:p> The Buccaneers are in last place overall in the USHL and are in the midst of a nine game losing streak. The Bucs are also winless in their last ten (0-9-1). <o:p></o:p> Interim coach Regg Simon is 0-6 since taking over behind the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place> following the December 1 resignation of Bob Ferguson.<o:p></o:p> The Bucs were outscored 14-4 in their final two games before the break. After being drubbed by the Riders on December 17, the Buccaneers suffered a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the Tri-City Storm the following evening. <o:p></o:p> The Buccaneers surrender 4.31 goals per game, far and away the most in the league. <o:p></o:p> Sean Muncy, whom the Riders dealt to the Bucs after the first game of the season, has thrived since arriving in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place>. Muncy, who played two full seasons in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:City></st1:place>, is second on the team in scoring with ten goals and 23 points. <o:p></o:p> The Gamblers’ December 18 win over <st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City> snapped <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place>’s five game (0-4-1) winless streak. In fact, with that victory and a 4-3 overtime loss December 17 at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:City></st1:place>, the Gamblers picked up three of a possible four points in their final two games before the break.<o:p></o:p> The Gamblers, who are six points behind fourth place <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:City></st1:place> in the East Division, have struggled at both ends of the ice. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place> ranks second to last in the league in both goals scored (2.56) and goals allowed (4.07) per game.<o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place>’s special teams have likewise been a major problem. The Gamblers rank dead last in the league in both power play (9.6%) and penalty killing efficiency (77.0%).<o:p></o:p> One bright spot for the Gamblers has been the play of top scorer Blake Wheeler (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2021" Day="11" Month="10">10-11-21</st1:date>). Wheeler was chosen fifth overall in June’s National Hockey League draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. He is the highest NHL draft pick to skate in the USHL following his NHL selection.<o:p></o:p> The Gamblers and Bucs will open the league’s post-Christmas slate when they meet tomorrow night in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place>. The Riders matched a single period season high by scoring four goals in the first period and again in the third. Ray Eichenlaub’s five point night accounted for merely part of the fireworks. Ted Purcell scored a power play goal to snap a 4-4 tie midway through the third period. Purcell set up Jordan Pietrus for what would prove to be the game winner just over a minute later. Matt Vokes (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2003" Day="1" Month="2">2-1-3</st1:date>) and Jon Grabarek (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2002" Day="1" Month="1">1-1-2</st1:date>) also did more than their share of damage.
