Riders Smother Stars 4-1

The RoughRiders scored four specials teams goals and Brady Hjelle made 31 saves as the host Riders defeated the Lincoln Stars 4-1 Saturday night.

Ben Lynch’s shorthanded goal opened the scoring at 17:29 of the first period. On a 2-on-1 break Lynch took a Scott Mathis feed and snapped the puck home from the left wing circle.

The Riders used a pair of second period power play goals to extend the lead to 3-0. Robin Bergman tipped in the Riders’ second of the night at 10:18; at the 18:07 mark Tyler Thompson swept the puck past Lincoln goaltender David Reekie from the slot.

After Jake Newton’s power play goal got the Stars on the scoreboard at 11:17 of the third period, the Riders responded with their third man advantage goal of the night as Matt Tomassoni’s blue line blast made it 4-1 at 14:04 of the third.
