Musketeers Outduel Riders in Shootout

Joe Miller scored one goal and added two assists in regulation and Seth Helgeson converted the deciding penalty shot as the Sioux City Musketeers edged the host RoughRiders 4-3 in a shootout Tuesday night.

Justin Brossman and Travis Oleksuk also converted in the shootout for the Musketeers before defenseman Helguson provided the clincher. Robin Bergman and Casey Wellman buried penalty shots for the Riders, who did earn one point for the shootout loss.

The Musketeers, who entered the third period trailing 3-2, were able to force overtime and, eventually, the shootout, after Stephane DaCosta evened the score at 10:58 of the third with a wrist shot from the left wing circle.

The RoughRiders had grabbed the initiative by outscoring the Musketeers 3-1 in a wild five minute, 46 second stretch of the second period. The Riders were on the power play when Doug Jones buried a Casey Wellman centering pass to even the score at one at 10:47 of the second. The Riders were shorthanded when, just under two minutes later, David Boehm’s backhander gave Cedar Rapids the lead. On the same Sioux City power play the Musketeers responded, knotting it up at two apiece on Miller’s tip in. Boehm put the Riders back on top when he raced into the goalmouth and scored from close range at the 16:33 mark.

Ben Kinne’s close range backhander gave Sioux City a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the game and proved be the only goal of the opening period.
