Game Summary: December 18, 2004- RoughRiders 6 Sioux City 5

The host RoughRiders scored four third period goals on the way to a wild 6-5 come from behind win over the Sioux City Musketeers Saturday night.

With the win, the Riders enter the United States Hockey League’s holiday break unbeaten in regulation (13-0-2) in a team record 15 straight games. The victory also extended the Riders’ home unbeaten streak to a team record-tying ten games (8-0-2).

With the score tied at four in the third period, Ted Purcell scored the tie breaking goal and set up what proved to be the game winner in a span of just one minute 17 seconds.

The Riders were on the power play when Purcell’s shot from the blue line sailed past Sioux City goaltender Jimmy Spratt to give Cedar Rapids a 5-4 lead at 10:56 of the third.

At 12:13, Purcell’s pin point cross ice pass sprang Jordan Pietrus, who charged through the right wing circle and in on net to wire the puck under the cross bar and make the score 6-4 with what was the Riders’ fourth straight goal.

Pietrus’s goal proved vital as Tim Kennedy brought the Musketeers back within one at 16:52 of the third with his second power play goal of the game. Kennedy walked out of the left wing corner into the slot and beat Rider goaltender Alex Stalock with a backhander.

The Musketeers pulled Spratt for an extra attacker in the final minute, but the Riders were able to hold on until the final horn.

The Riders trailed 4-2 entering the third period, but Matt Vokes triggered the Cedar Rapids turnaround by scoring his second goal of the night just 2:10 into the third. Vokes, who finished the game with three points, steered home a Billy Loupee centering pass to cut the Sioux City lead to 4-3.

At the 8:29 mark, Greg Collins knotted the game at four. Collins picked the top corner with a shot from the left wing circle to set the stage for Purcell’s heroics just minutes later.

The Riders third period explosion came after the Musketeers ripped off four straight goals of their own in the first and second periods.

The Riders held a seemingly comfortable 2-0 lead until Peter Lenes tipped in a Steven Kampfer shot at 16:16 of the first period.

The Riders suffered another blow at 17:15 of the first period when Zach Miskovic was assessed a double minor penalty and a game ejection for spearing.

So with the Riders shorn of their top defenseman in Miskovic, Kennedy tied the score at two on the power play just 38 seconds into the second period. Kennedy swept a low shot from the right wing circle under Stalock kick start a three goal period for the Musketeers.

Phillip DeSimone gave the Musketeers their first lead at 7:19. DeSimone’s shot from the right wing circle deflected past Stalock and the Riders suddenly found themselves trailing 3-2.

Worse news for the Riders arrived just 45 seconds later when Corey Elkins extended the Sioux City lead to 4-2. Elkins skated through the left wing circle and scored with a wrister as Stalock unsuccessfully tried to poke check the puck of Elkins’s stick.

The Riders found themselves down by a pair in the second after they had the scored the game’s first two goals back in the first period.

Vokes scored from the goalmouth at put the Riders up 1-0 12:46 into the game.

Jon Grabarek doubled the lead with a nifty power play goal just over three minutes later. Vokes set the scoring play in motion with a cross ice feed to Ray Eichenlaub in the right wing circle. Eichenlaub chose to set up Grabarek in the slot rather than shoot and Grabarek buried the puck in the empty side before Spratt could move across the goalmouth.
