Five different RoughRiders scored goals and Brady Hjelle made 36 saves as the Riders defeated the host Des Moines Buccaneers 5-1 Wednesday night.
The Riders jumped in front early and never looked back. David Boehm’s backhander gave Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead just under two minutes into the game.
The Riders doubled the lead when Doug Jones scored from close range at 11:11 of the first period.
The Riders scored a pair of power play goals late in the second period to open up a commanding lead. Cedar Rapids was up 5-on-3 when Kyle Flanagan fired the puck home under the cross bar at 17:06. Just 94 seconds later the Riders made it 4-0 when Matt Donovan buried Flanagan’s cross-crease pass.
The Bucs were on the power play when Rocco Carzo’s tip in put Des Moines on the scoreboard at 2:27 of the third period, but the Riders would finish the night on a high as Matt Tomassoni extended the lead to 5-1 with a blast from the right point at 15:44 of the third.
