Chicago Tames RoughRiders 5-3

Rob Madore made 40 saves and the Chicago Steel built a 5-1 lead on the way to a 5-3 win over the host RoughRiders Friday night.

Brian Dowd’s power play tip-in opened the scoring just 3:31 into the game.

The Riders bounced back to tie the game with a power play goal of their own when Mike Seidel swooped into the goalmouth to convert a Doug Jones feed at 9:16 of the first.

The deadlock last just 66 seconds before Chicago retook the lead for good. Simon Olsson’s wrist shot from the high slot sailed home to make it 2-1 at 10:22 of the first.

Just over two minutes later Brian O’Neill buried the third Chicago goal into an open net after the puck squirted away from Rider goaltender Brady Hjelle beside the cage.

At 9:14 of the second period Andrew Miller produced what proved to be the game winning goal when he stretched the Steel lead to 4-1with wrister from the left wing circle.

After Luca Cunti scored the fourth straight Chicago goal on the power play at 1:30 of the third period, the Riders replaced starting goaltender Brady Hjelle (18 saves) with Kent Patterson.

The Riders would narrow the gap to 5-3 with third period goals from Kyle Flanagan (on the power play) and Ben Lynch, but Madore, who stopped 30 shots over just final two periods, would not allow Cedar Rapids to get any closer.
