RoughRiders Break Team Record For Longest Road Winning Streak

December 15, 2004- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders last night set a new club record with their seventh straight road win, a 4-3 shootout defeat of the Sioux City Musketeers in Sioux City.

The Riders broke the old team record of six consecutive away wins set from November 1 through December 2, 2003. The Riders have not suffered a road loss since falling to the Tri-City Storm 5-1 in Kearney, Nebraska on November 6. The Riders are five victories short of the longest road winning streak in United States Hockey League history. The Rochester Mustangs won twelve straight on the road over parts of two seasons- 1985-86 and 1986-87.

The Riders (18-3-3, 37 points) are off to their best start since arriving in Cedar Rapids in 1999. Coach Mark Carlson’s club is in first place in the United States Hockey League’s East Division, a whopping eleven points ahead of the second place Chicago Steel. The Riders have one game in hand on the Steel. The Riders are just one point behind the Omaha Lancers in the race for first place overall in the league, despite having played two fewer games than the Lancers.

Last night’s record breaking win was the latest in a series of milestones the Riders have reached this season. Most notably, the Riders have now gone 13 straight games without suffering a regulation loss. They have gone 11-0-2 during that run to break the old club record of ten consecutive games without a regulation defeat set last season.

Last night’s win also left the Riders 15 games above .500 for the first time in team history. Prior to this season the Riders had topped out at 14 games over .500, a high water mark they reached late in the 2001-02 season. A 3-2 win over Rochester on March 30, 2002, lifted the Riders’ record to 33-19-7. The Riders went on to drop their final two regular season games and finished the campaign with a record of 33-21-7.

Rider goaltender Dan Tormey has started the season 9-0-1 to break the old club record for longest unbeaten streak by a goalie (nine games). Dating back to his final regular season appearance last year- a 6-2 win in Sioux Falls on March 27- Tormey has gone a total of eleven games without a suffering regulation defeat. His last loss in regulation came on February 27 of last season, when the Riders suffered a 5-2 set back at Sioux City.

With a goal last night, Jon Grabarek became the first RoughRider in team history reach 100 career points. Grabarek has scored 43 goals and totaled 57 assists in two-plus seasons in Cedar Rapids. Last night’s goal was Grabarek’s first point since he picked up two assists in a December 4 win at Indiana to break the old team career record of 97 points.

Another third year Rider, defenseman Zach Miskovic, earlier this season broke the team record for most consecutive games played. Miskovic, who has not missed a game since joining the Riders in 2002-03, has now appeared in 144 straight regular season contests.

Yet another potential milestone looms for the Riders this weekend. The Riders are unbeaten in regulation (6-0-2) in eight home games since suffering their only regulation home loss of the season to Chicago on October 23. If they avoid a regulation defeat in their next two home games- this Friday against Des Moines and this Saturday against Sioux City- the Riders will extend their home unbeaten streak to a team record-tying ten consecutive games.

Both of this weekend’s game face off at 7:05PM. Tickets for those games- and the rest of the RoughRiders’ remaining home games- are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or in person at the ice arena. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days. Ticket prices range from $8.00 to $17.00 including a 50-cent facility fee.
| Posted on Wednesday, December 15, 2004 (Archive on Wednesday, December 15, 2004)
