RoughRiders Ground Green Bay 5-2

Casey Wellman scored two goals- including the game winner- and Brady Hjelle made 39 saves as the RoughRiders defeated the host Green Bay Gamblers 5-2 Sunday afternoon.

The Riders were on the power play when Wellman snapped a 2-2 tie at 15:17 of the second period. Wellman shoveled a rebound home for his first goal of the game and the first of three unanswered for Cedar Rapids.

The Riders widened the gap at 4:06 of the third period when Mike Seidel roofed the puck from the doorstep. The Riders were shorthanded when Wellman capped off the win with an empty net goal with just over three minutes remaining.

The Riders struck for three straight only after the Gamblers had rallied from a 2-0 deficit. Justin Filzen’s wrister from the right wing circle got Green Bay on the scoreboard for the first time at 1:08 of the second. Christian Morrissette’s power play goal evened the score at 13:12.

The Riders got the early jump on the Gamblers when Kyle Flanagan opened the scoring by tipping in a Matt Donovan shot 3:17 into the game.

Tyler Thompson doubled the lead at 11:20 of the first period by burying a Doug Jones centering pass.

The Riders came out of the first period on top 2-0 thanks in large part to the efforts of Hjelle, who stopped 18 shots in the opening 20 minutes alone.
