Cedar Rapids RoughRiders forward Tyler Thompson has been named RBK Hockey United States Hockey League Offensive Player of the Week.
Thompson, 18, scored three goals and collected three assists while posting a plus/minus rating of +5 as the Riders swept a pair of games from the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets in Columbus last weekend. The Wayzata, Minnesota native scored once and also picked up an assist in a 6-3 win last Friday night. One night later Thompson equaled a team season high for points in one game- four- by scoring a pair of goals and adding two assists as the Riders defeated the Blue Jackets 5-4.
“Tyler’s obviously very skilled and he can also provide a physical presence for us,” said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson. “That combination makes him a very effective player.”
On the season, Thompson, who has played in each of the Riders’ first 25 games, leads the team in goals (11) and plus/minus (+13) and is tied for second in points (24). Last year, in his first USHL campaign, he scored eight goals and totaled 17 points in 37 games.
Thompson starred for Benilde St. Margaret’s School in St. Louis Park, Minnesota before arriving in Cedar Rapids last season.
The RoughRiders (17-7-1, 35 points) are currently in second place in the USHL’s East Division. The Riders, who suffered a 4-1 loss to the Black Hawks in Waterloo last night, will battle the Hawks again Friday night at 7:05 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. One night later the Riders will welcome the Green Bay Gamblers to the ice arena for another 7:05 tilt.
