Black Hawks Down RoughRiders 4-1

Brett Olson scored the game winning power play goal and also provided a shorthanded goal and Blake Kessel scored once and added two assists as the host Waterloo Black Hawks ripped off four unanswered goals on the way to a 4-1 win over the RoughRiders Monday night.

Olson broke a 1-1 tie just 24 seconds into the third period by blasting the puck home from the top of the left wing circle.

Two minutes later Kessel swept the puck past Rider goaltender Brady Hjelle (24 saves) to extend the Waterloo lead to 3-1.

The Hawks were down a man when Olson struck again at 6:44 of the third on a breakaway.

The Hawks’ goal rush started late in the second period with a Billy Maday power play goal. After Hjelle stopped Kessel’s wrister Maday buried the rebound to tie the game at one at the 18:49 mark.

The Riders had taken a 1-0 lead when Vince Mihalek charged down the slot and launched a low backhander past Waterloo goaltender Joe Howe at 12:30 of the first period.

Howe, who finished the night with 29 saves, would keep the Riders off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
