Tyler Thompson scored two goals- including the game winner- and picked up one assist and Ben Lynch collected four assists as the RoughRiders outlasted the host Ohio Junior Blue Jackets 5-4 Saturday night.
With the win the Riders completed a two-game weekend sweep of Ohio.
Thompson’s crucial second goal gave the Riders’ a 5-3 lead and some breathing room at 14:03 of the third period after Matt Tomassoni’s power play one timer had snapped a 3-3 tie at 6:19 of the third.
Thompson’s tip-in proved all the more important after Greg Pateryn buried a Dan Durham centering pass to make it 5-4 at 15:07 of the third.
The Riders were forced to finish off the Blue Jackets in the third after Ohio had rallied from a 3-1 second period deficit by scoring twice in 60 seconds. The Blue Jackets cut the gap to 3-2 when Tim Hall deflected Luke Witkowski’s shot home at 13:50. Ohio had barely finished celebrating before Matt Leitner scored a power play goal from the slot to even the score.
Earlier on it was the Riders who held the upper hand. First period goals three minutes apart from Nick Oddo and Thompson enabled Cedar Rapids to take a 2-0 lead into the second intermission. After Clark MacLean got the Jackets on the scoreboard off a goalmouth scramble at 3:37 of the middle frame, the Riders were soon enough able to reestablish a two goal lead. Cedar Rapids was on the power play when Ian Slater converted Doug Jones’s goalmouth feed to make it 3-1 at the 12:16 mark of the second.
