The RoughRiders got big nights from Mike Seidel (one goal and three assists) and Doug Jones (one goal and two assists) and scored three unanswered third period goals on the way to a 6-3 win over the host Ohio Junior Blue Jackets Friday night.
The late Cedar Rapids outburst started when Ben Lynch snapped a 3-3 tie at 6:23 of the third. Just 52 seconds after Lynch’s shot was deflected past Ohio goaltender Pasquale Terrazzano, Seidel walked in alone to extend the Rider lead to 5-3. Cedar Rapids made it 6-3 when Casey Wellman finished off a 2-on-1 rush at 13:13.
The Riders were in need of third period fireworks after Dan Barczuk scored back-to-back goals to rally the Blue Jackets. Just 27 seconds after Jones scored a power play goal for Cedar Rapids, the Blue Jackets converted on their own man advantage when Barczuk buried a rebound to cut what had been a 3-1 Rider lead to just one goal at 10:37 of the second period. The Jackets were shorthanded when Barczuk struck again- this time on a breakaway- to tie the game at three at 2:41 of the third period.
The Riders grabbed an early 2-0 lead on goals from Tyler Thompson 1:12 into the game and from Vince Mihalek at 3:42 of the first period. Andy Taranto got Ohio on the scoreboard for the first time at 11:04 of the first.
