The Riders have two games in hand on <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place>. <o:p></o:p> The Riders are three points behind the West Division-leading Omaha Lancers in the race for first place overall. The Riders boast the USHL’s best winning percentage (.804).<o:p></o:p> The Riders earned three of a possible four points in two games last weekend, falling to <st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City> 3-2 in overtime Friday night and defeating <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:City></st1:place> 4-1 Saturday. This week the Riders play their final three games before the USHL’s holiday break.<o:p></o:p> Dan Tormey was in goal for Saturday’s game and has now gone 9-0-1 on the season to set a new team record for longest unbeaten streak by a goaltender. Dating back to his final regular season appearance last year- a 6-2 win in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:City></st1:place> on March 27- Tormey has gone a total of eleven games without a suffering regulation defeat. His last loss came on February 27 of last season, when the Riders suffered a 5-2 set back at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p> Saturday’s victory extended the Riders’ road winning streak to a team record-tying six straight games. The Riders have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="2" Month="10">10-2-1</st1:date> away from home on the season, the best road record in the USHL.<o:p></o:p> The Riders are also unbeaten in regulation (6-0-2) in eight home contests since suffering their only regulation home loss of the season to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> on October 23. If the Riders are able to extend their home unbeaten streak to ten consecutive games by avoiding defeat in both of this weekend’s games at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, they will match the longest such streak in team history.<o:p></o:p> The Riders tomorrow night play their third straight game against a West Division opponent. The Riders are unbeaten in regulation (2-0-2) in their last four games against the west. The Riders have won ten straight against East Division foes since suffering their only loss of the season to an eastern opponent (also the October 23 setback against <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place>). <o:p></o:p> The Riders’ attack is both potent and well balanced. The Riders rank third in the league in goals per game (3.78), yet no Rider ranks in the top fifteen in the league in point scoring. However, eleven different Riders have recorded at least ten points so far this season.<o:p></o:p> The Musketeers are just three points behind the West Division leading Lancers and are tied with the Riders for second place overall in the USHL. <o:p></o:p> Like the Riders, the Musketeers had a six game winning streak snapped last weekend. Saturday’s 5-4 shootout loss in Tri-City was <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place>’s first defeat since November 20. The Musketeers remain unbeaten in regulation in their last seven games, however. <o:p></o:p> The Tri-City defeat came just two days after the Musketeers drubbed <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:City></st1:place> 6-0 on home ice.<o:p></o:p> Having scored at least four goals in each of their last seven games, the Musketeers have overtaken the Riders and Lancers for the league lead in goals per game (3.9).<o:p></o:p> Tim Kennedy (14-14-28) paces a balanced <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux City</st1:City></st1:place> attack. Eleven different Musketeers have notched at least 13 points.<o:p></o:p> The Buccaneers are in last place overall in the USHL and are in the midst of a seven game losing streak. The Bucs are also winless in their last eight (0-7-1). <o:p></o:p> Interim coach Regg Simon is 0-4 since taking over behind the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place> following the December 1 resignation of Bob Ferguson.<o:p></o:p> The Bucs suffered a pair of one goal road losses last weekend. <st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City> dropped a 4-3 decision to <st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State> last Friday and fell to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> 3-2 the following evening. The Bucs gave up game winning goals with less than five minutes remaining in both contests. <o:p></o:p> The Buccaneers are one of just two teams to allow an average of more than four goals per game this season. In an effort to shore up their goaltending, the Bucs swapped netminders with <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State></st1:place> last week, acquiring Jake Maida in exchange for Pat Watson.<o:p></o:p> Sean Muncy, whom the Riders dealt to the Bucs after the first game of the season, has thrived since arriving in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place>. The Riders protected a one goal lead deep into the third period until giving up Chris Hepp’s tying goal with just <st1:time w:st="on" Minute="9" Hour="14">2:09</st1:time> left in regulation. Phil Axtell’s goal at <st1:time w:st="on" Minute="53" Hour="15">3:53</st1:time> of the third had given the Riders a 2-1 advantage, their second lead of the night. Shane Lovdahl (who also had one assist) provided some insurance with a power play goal at the <st1:time w:st="on" Minute="55" Hour="15">15:55</st1:time> mark. Erik Felde capped of the win with an empty net goal with just over two seconds remaining. Justin Abdelkader opened the scoring in the final minute of the first period.
