RoughRider Alum Bachman Named WCHA Rookie of the Week

Former Cedar Rapids RoughRiders goaltender Richard Bachman, now a freshman at Colorado College, has been named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Red Baron Rookie of the Week.

Bachman, 20, stopped 52 of the 56 shots he faced while backstopping fourth-ranked C.C. to a split of a two game series with arch rival Denver last weekend. Bachman made 28 saves in the Tigers’ 5-1 win over D.U. last Friday in Colorado Springs. One night later the Highland Ranch, Colorado, native turned aside 24 shots in a 3-2 loss in Denver.

For the season, Bachman ranks fourth in the nation in save percentage (.944) and has gone 8-2-0 with a sterling 1.70 goals against average and one shutout to help propel C.C. (8-2-0 conference, 8-4-0 overall) to the top of the WCHA.

This marks the second time in just three weeks that Bachman has been named WCHA Rookie of the Week and the third straight week that a former Rider goaltender has taken home WCHA honors- Al Stalock, now a sophomore at Minnesota-Duluth, was named the conference’s co-Defensive Player of the Week last week.

Last year Bachman went 14-10-2 with a 2.99 goals against average, two shutouts and a .913 save percentage in 26 games with the RoughRiders after being acquired in an early-season trade with the Chicago Steel. Bachman was superb for Cedar Rapids in last spring’s Clark Cup playoffs, going 4-1 in six games while posting a microscopic 1.28 goals against average, two shutouts and a .951 save percentage.

Bachman was selected by the Dallas Stars in the fourth round of the 2006 National Hockey League Draft with the one hundred twentieth overall choice.

The RoughRiders (12-4-1, 25 points) are in first place in the USHL’s East Division. The Riders will be back in action this Friday evening when they visit the Sioux City Musketeers. The Riders will then return home to take on the Green Bay Gamblers Saturday night at 7:05.
