Ian Slater converted the deciding penalty shot and Brady Hjelle made 37 saves as the RoughRiders defeated the host Waterloo Black Hawks 2-1 in a shootout Thrusday night.
The Riders used goals from Slater and Garrett Vermeersch to outscore the Hawks 2-1 in the shootout as only Jan-Mikael Juutilainen converted a penalty shot for Waterloo. The Hawks did earn one point for the shootout defeat.
Earlier on it was the Riders who opened the scoring when Scott Mathis gave Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead at 12:06 of the first period. Mathis’s drive from the left point broke in off the pad of Waterloo goaltender Matt DiGirgolamo.
The Black Hawks used a two-man advantage to even the score at one apiece at 13:10 of the second period. Waterloo was up 5-on-3 when Blake Kessell ripped the puck in under the cross bar from the top of the right wing circle.
