Kyle Flanagan’s second goal of the game snapped a 3-3 tie with 4:20 left in the third period and the host RoughRiders went on to defeat the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets 4-3 Friday night.
The Riders were on the power play when Flanagan steered the game winner in from the doorstep. The stage was set for Flanagan’s later heroics after the Blue Jackets rallied from a 3-1 deficit to even the score.
Ohio was on the power play when Derek Roehl’s tip-in narrowed the Cedar Rapids lead to 3-2 at 16:22 of the second period.
At 4:42 of the third period Dan Durham tapped in his own rebound to tie the game at three.
Earlier on it was the Riders who had to battle from behind. Cedar Rapids fell behind 1-0 just 3:46 into the game when Dan Barczuk backhanded a Matt Leitner centering pass home, but the Riders would rebound to grab the lead with two quick goals later in the period.
Flanagan evened the score at one with a wrist shot from the right wing circle at 16:03 of the first. Just 63 seconds later the Riders converted a power play opportunity when Scott Mathis’s blue line blast broke the deadlock.
The Riders extended the lead to 3-1 with another power play goal early in the second period. Nick Oddo capped off a fine individual effort when he darted between two checkers into the slot and snapped the puck in just inside the left post at 1:27 of the second.
