RoughRiders, Jaycees Team Up for Succesful Teddy Bear Toss; 700 Bears Donated to Christmas Toy Shop

December 10, 2004- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Cedar Rapids Jaycees teamed up for a hugely successful second annual Teddy Bear Toss during the RoughRiders’ game against the Omaha Lancers earlier this evening at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Fans in attendance threw approximately 700 teddy bears out onto the ice after Erik Felde scored the Riders’ first goal 17:37 into the game. The Teddy Bears were collected from the ice by Rider players and staff and will be donated to The Christmas Toy Shop just in time for Christmas.

“We’re extremely happy with the overwhelming generosity shown by our fans tonight,” said RoughRiders Vice President of Operations Jim Calpin. “It was certainly a great show of Christmas spirit. We feel very fortunate to be able to work with Cedar Rapids Jaycees on a project like the Teddy Bear Toss.”

The Christmas Toy Shop is a partnership between Toys for Tots and The Salvation Army which provides holiday toys for children in need up to 17 years of age. Last year the two groups served more than 700 families and approximately 3,000 children in the Cedar Rapids area.

The Jaycees and the United States Marine Corps coordinate the Cedar Rapids area Toys for Tots program.

While the Riders lost this evening’s game 3-2 in overtime, they did earn one point in the standings for their efforts and remain in first place in the United States Hockey League’s East Division with a record of 16-3-3. The Riders face road games tomorrow night in Sioux Falls and Tuesday evening in Sioux City before returning home for a pair of games next weekend. Des Moines visits the ice arena next Friday night, while Sioux City calls on the Riders next Saturday evening. Both of next weekend’s games start at 7:05PM.

Tickets for next weekend’s games- and the rest of the RoughRiders’ remaining home games- are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or in person at the ice arena. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days. Ticket prices range from $8.00 to $17.00 including a 50-cent facility fee.
| Posted on Saturday, December 11, 2004 (Archive on Saturday, December 11, 2004)
