Brock Montpetit and Billy Maday converted penalty shots as the Waterloo Black Hawks edged the host RoughRiders 3-2 in a shootout Friday night.
The Riders, who were outscored 2-1 in the shootout as only Garrett Vermeersch converted for Cedar Rapids, did earn one point for their efforts.
Waterloo’s Drew McKenzie forced overtime and- eventually- the shootout by evening the score with a blast from the blue line with six and a half minutes left in the third period.
The Hawks had taken a 1-0 lead into the third only for the Riders to rally with pair of goals. Ian Slater buried a Doug Jones feed from point blank range to even the score at one just 37 seconds into the period. The Riders took a 2-1 lead while on the power play when Mike Seidel blasted the puck past Waterloo goaltender Matt DiGirolamo (18 saves) at the 6:27 mark.
It took better than a period and a half until the first goal of the night was scored. The Black Hawks broke the scoreless deadlock when Nick Larson fired a Brett Beebe centering feed home under the cross bar at 12:02 of the second period.
