The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders have named forward Ian Slater team captain and named forward Doug Jones and defenseman Scott Mathis assistant captains, the RoughRiders announced today.
“Ian, Doug and Scott have shown strong leadership both on and off the ice for us,” said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson. “They should all do a very good job as captains.”
Slater, 19, is in his third season with the team. The Satellite Beach, Florida, native has scored one goal and assisted on two others in two games this year. Slater played his one hundredth game for the team as the Riders scored a 7-2 opening night win over the Chicago Steel on October 5 in Bensenville, Illinois.
Last season Slater scored 15 goals and totaled 33 points while also piling up 115 penalty minutes in 59 games. His plus/minus rating of +15 was the second best on the team. Over the course of his Rider career, Slater has scored 21 goals and notched 43 points in 101 games. Slater was originally selected by the RoughRiders in the seventeenth round of the 2005 United States Hockey League Draft with the one hundred forty-fifth overall choice. Next season he will begin his college career at Western Michigan.
This is Jones’s second year in Cedar Rapids. The 20-year old has picked up one assist in three games this season. Jones scored 11 goals and collected 29 points in 58 games last year. The Marietta, Georgia, product joined the Riders after skating for the Taft School in Connecticut in 2005-06.
Mathis, 19, is also in his second season with the Riders. He has recorded a goal and an assist in three games this season after scoring twice and totaling seven points in 46 games last year. A native of Crystal Lake, Illinois, Mathis was chosen in the nineteenth round of the 2006 USHL Draft with the one hundred eightieth pick.
The RoughRiders (3-0-0, 6 points) are in first place in the USHL’s East Division. The Riders are next in action this Friday night when they take on the Indiana Ice in Indianapolis. The Riders will return home to battle the Des Moines Buccaneers Saturday evening at 7:05.

The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days. Ticket prices range from $7 to $17 in advance and from $8 to $18 on game days.
