Brady Hjelle made 25 saves and Mike Seidel’s tie-breaking first period power play goal stood up as the game winner as the host RoughRiders defeated the Indiana Ice 3-1 Saturday night in the Riders’ home opener.
The Riders battled back after surrendering the game’s first goal and would take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Indiana grabbed the 1-0 lead while on the power play when Paul Carey one timed a Jake Skjodt centering pass home at 11:09 of the first period.
The Riders responded with two goals in 59 seconds. Justin Bruckel charged into the goalmouth to steer a David Boehm feed past Indiana goaltender Scott Darling and even the score at 13:47.
Just under a minute later the Riders were up a man when Seidel jammed in the go-ahead goal from the doorstep.
The Riders extended the lead to 3-1 five minutes into the third period when Matt Donovan hammered the puck home from the middle of the blue line just five seconds into another Cedar Rapids power play.
