Gustav Bengtson scored what proved to be the game winning goal at 6:13 of the third period and the RoughRiders went on to defeat the Sioux Falls Stampede 4-3 Saturday evening in preseason action at the United States Hockey League’s Fall Classic in Sioux City. With the win the Rider finished the Fall Classic 3-0.
Bengtson scored the winner off a 3-on-1 rush, a goal that gave the Riders a 4-2 lead and stood up as the difference after Gabe Guentzel’s power play blast at 10:39 of the third narrowed the gap to 4-3.
The Riders took the lead three times over the first two periods but were unable to shake the Stampede over the first forty minutes.
The RoughRiders opened the scoring just one minute, 17 seconds into the game. Ian Slater charged into the goal mouth and snapped a Doug Jones centering feed under the cross bar to make it 1-0.
Sioux Falls evened the score at 14:00 of the first period when Jack Connolly fired a wrist shot past Rider goaltender Brady Hjelle (22 saves) high on the glove side.
The Riders retook the lead with just 52 seconds left in the opening period when Justin Bruckel ripped the puck home from left wing circle.
The Stampede evened the score at two at 4:54 of the second period when Patrick Divjak charged down the right wing and centered to David Grun, who finished from close range.
Tyler Thompson buried a rebound at 16:33 of the second to put the Riders back on top for good.
