David Boehm scored the game winning goal midway through the third period and sealed the victory with an empty net goal with just over a minute remaining as the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defeated the Lincoln Stars 6-4 Friday at the United States Hockey League’s Fall Classic preseason tournament.
The Stars took a 4-3 lead into the third period, but a bullet off the stick of Matt Donovan found the back of the net at 5:27 of the third and triggered a Rider rally. Boehm struck for the go ahead goal at 10:05 after being sent in alone by Gustav Bengtson.
Lincoln goaltender Kevin Murdoch had already vacated the goal in favor of an extra attacker when Boehm won a foot race to bury the clinching empty netter at 18:40 of the third.
The Riders also held the lead in the second period- but not for long. Cedar Rapids was on the power play when Matt Tomassoni’s blue line blast gave the Riders a 3-2 lead at 1:07 of the middle frame. Undaunted, the Stars would forge in front with two second period goals of their own. Jared Festler buried a Kyle Verbeek centering feed at 8:30 and Dennis Brown charged into the goalmouth to roof Kyle Follmer’s set-up with just 1:09 left in the second.
A see-saw first period finished tied at two. After Tyler Brickler gave Lincoln a 1-0 lead just 40 seconds into the game, Cedar Rapids’ Jeff Vellecca waited a mere 37 seconds before tying the score. At 5:23 Ben Lynch finished a nifty give-and-go with Mike Seidel to give Cedar Rapids a 2-1 lead. The Stars responded at 7:05, knotting it up again when Kyle Follmer jammed the puck in from a goal mouth scramble.
