David Boehm scored with just 1:31 left in regulation to give the RoughRiders a 3-2 win over the host Sioux City Musketeers on the opening night of the United States Hockey League’s Fall Classic preseason tournament Thursday evening.
Boehm walked in on a clean breakaway and wristed the puck past Sioux City goaltender Josh Robinson. The Riders then held off the Musketeers over the final 91 seconds.
The Musketeers’ Donnie Hallmark had knotted it up at two apiece at 8:55 of the third, sweeping the puck between Rider goaltender Brady Hjelle’s (30 saves) pads from the slot.
The Riders took their first lead of the night with a pair of second period power play goals. Ben Lynch jammed the puck home from the doorstep at 3:42 to even the score at one. Doug Jones broke the deadlock by burying a Stefan Salituro centering feed at 16:17.
The Riders were forced to operate from behind early as it took the Musketeers just 23 seconds to grab a first period lead. Spencer Heichman shoveled the puck past Hjelle after Hjelle turned aside Travis Oleksuk’s bid.
