Scott Mathis’s power play goal with 6:51 left in regulation proved to be the game winner as the RoughRiders defeated the host Waterloo Black Hawks 2-1 in preseason action Tuesday night.
Mathis’s blue line blast snapped a 1-1 tie deep into the second of two twenty-five minute halves.
The Riders had been up two men when Ben Lynch evened the score at one by sweeping the puck home from close range at 7:55 of the second half.
The Black Hawks’ Paul Weisgarber scored the only goal of the opening half 17:11 into the contest.
Brady Hjelle made 23 saves to earn the win in goal for Cedar Rapids.
