Andrew Hamburg scored with just 38 seconds left in regulation to give the Waterloo Black Hawks a 4-3 preseason win over the host RoughRiders Wednesday night.
Hamburg’s wrist shot from the slot capped off a wild finish to the contest. The Hawks’ Brett Beebe jammed the puck in from the side of the net with 2:20 remaining in the second of two thirty-minute halves to even the score at three. The goal- Beebe’s second in just over four minutes- came a mere 21 seconds after Ian Slater scored his second goal of the game- shorthanded- to give Cedar Rapids a 3-2 lead. Slater finished off a two-on-one rush by firing home a feed from Ben Lynch.
Earlier in the second half the Black Hawks used goals from Anthony Schooley and Brett Beebe to turn a 2-0 Rider advantage into a 2-2 deadlock. The Hawks solved Rider goaltender Brady Hjelle (33 saves) for the first time at 19:40. Anthony Schooley converted a cross crease feed from Billy Maday to cut the Cedar Rapids lead to 2-1. At 23:25 Beede’s tip in knotted the score at two apiece.
The Riders had opened the scoring at 10:45 of the first half. Cedar Rapids was on the power play when Slater buried a rebound from close range. The Riders doubled the lead when Stefan Salituro scored off a goal mouth scramble at 17:12 of the first half.
