RoughRiders Slip Past Des Moines in Preseason Opener

Garrett Vermeersch converted the deciding penalty shot as the host Cedar Rapids RoughRiders outscored the Des Moines Buccaneers 2-1 in the shootout to claim a 4-3 preseason victory Tuesday night in Coralville.

Vermeersch, who also scored in regulation, ended the game with the Riders’ sixth penalty shot after Cedar Rapids’ Doug Jones and Des Moines’ Andrew Blazek had scored earlier in the shootout. Rider goaltender Brady Hjelle stopped five of six Des Moines penalty shots after making 21 saves in regulation.

The Riders twice came from behind to tie the game in regulation. The Buccaneers led 3-2 until a power play goal from the Riders’ Gustav Bengtson with 6:43 left in the third period evened the score.

Vermeersch scored the only even strength goal of the night to erase what had been a 2-1 Des Moines lead at 12:11 of the second period.

The Riders’ Bryce Aneloski opened the scoring at 17:05 of the first period.
