RoughRiders’ Martinez Commits to Miami of Ohio

December 6, 2004- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defenseman Alec Martinez has committed to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, the RoughRiders announced today. Martinez will begin his college career in the fall of 2006.

“This is obviously a very exciting move for Alex,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “He is a fine young player who is going to have the chance to play here and improve further the rest of this season and next season and then have the chance to go on and be an effective college hockey player.”

Martinez, 17, has scored three goals and totaled five points in 19 games this season while turning in a solid plus/minus rating of +7. The first year blue liner has been a defensive stalwart on a Rider team that has given up a total of just seven goals while winning its last six games.

Along with defenseman Ray Eichenlaub and forward Gary Steffes, Martinez is one of three current Riders bound for Miami. Eichenlaub will move on to MU next season, while Steffes is set to join Martinez as a Miami freshman in the autumn of 2006.

The Riders selected Martinez in the sixth round of May’s United States Hockey League entry draft with the sixty-second overall choice. The Rochester, Michigan, native played for the Honeybaked midget team last season.

In addition, Martinez was chosen to represent his country as part of the United States Select Team that finished fourth in the Under-18 Junior World Cup in Slovakia and the Czech Republic in August.

Miami has gone 7-8-1 overall this season. Coach Enrico Blasi’s Red Hawks are tied for tenth place in the powerhouse Central Collegiate Hockey Association with a 3-6-1 conference record. Last season Miami went 23-14-4 and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in six years.

Martinez joins Eichenlaub, Steffes, Justin Abdelkader (Michigan State), Phil Axtell (Michigan Tech), Greg Collins (New Hampshire), Ted Purcell (Maine) and Matt Vokes (Brown) as the eighth member of the 2004-05 RoughRiders to make a college commitment.

Martinez and the East Division-leading RoughRiders (16-3-2, 34 points) return to action Friday night at 7:05 when they host the Omaha Lancers. The Riders are the hottest team in the USHL, having won six straight games and gone unbeaten in regulation (9-0-1) in a team record-tying ten games in a row. The Riders swept a pair of games from the Indiana Ice in Indianapolis over the weekend.

At Friday’s game, the RoughRiders and the Cedar Rapids Jaycees will team up to host their second annual Teddy Bear Toss to benefit The Christmas Toy Shop. Fans are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped teddy bears to the game and toss them onto the ice after the RoughRiders score their first goal. The teddy bears will then be collected and donated to The Christmas Toy Shop.

Tickets for RoughRider home games are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or in person at the ice arena.
