RoughRiders’ Donovan, Wideman, Hjelle Named to U.S. Under-18 Team

Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defensemen Matt Donovan and Chris Wideman and goaltender Brady Hjelle have been named to the United States Under-18 Select Team that will play in the 2007 Under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament from August 14-18 in Piestany, Slovakia and Hodonin, Czech Republic.

The RoughRiders selected Donovan, 17, in the first round of May’s United States Hockey League draft with the tenth overall selection. The Edmond, Oklahoma, native played midget hockey for the Dallas Junior Stars last season.

Wideman, also 17, was chosen by the Riders in the first round of the October, 2006 USHL Futures Draft with the fourth overall pick. Wideman last season played in his hometown for the St. Louis Junior Blues midget program.

This will mark the second straight summer Wideman will wear red, white and blue. He skated for the United States Under-17 Selects at the 2006 Under-17 Three Nations Tournament in Rochester, New York.

Hjelle was likewise tabbed by the Riders in last fall’s Futures Draft. The 17-year old went to Cedar Rapids in the ninth round with the one hundredth choice. Hjelle played for International Falls (Minnesota) High School last season.

Teams from Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland will join the United States at the Hlinka tournament. The 21-player U.S. roster is composed of players who participated in USA Hockey’s Select 17 Player Development Camp earlier this month in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

The RoughRiders will open their ninth season in Cedar Rapids this fall. 2007-08 season tickets are currently available through the RoughRiders’ business office (319-247-0340). Fans who pay for season tickets in full before August 15 will receive a significant discount in addition to a host of other benefits available exclusively to season ticket holders.
