Former Rider Goepfert Returns to Ice Arena Tomorrow Night

Former Cedar Rapids RoughRiders goaltending standout Bobby Goepfert, who just completed his senior season at St. Cloud State, will return to the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena to meet fans and sign autographs tomorrow night during the RoughRiders’ second round playoff game against the Indiana Ice.

Goepfert will sign autographs on the ice arena concourse behind section H during the first period of tomorrow evening’s game, a contest that starts at 7:05PM. Autographs will be available free of charge to fans attending the game.

Goepfert, 23, this season earned All-Western Collegiate Hockey Association First Team honors for the second year in a row after backstopping St. Cloud to a second place finish in the WCHA and a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Goepfert went 17-10-7 with a 2.29 goals against average, a .924 save percentage and 3 shutouts this season. The Kings Park, New York, native finished eighth in the nation in save percentage and was tied for ninth in shutouts. Goepfert spent two seasons at St. Cloud after transferring from Providence College.

Goepfert likewise spent two years in Cedar Rapids and still holds a host of RoughRider single season and career goaltending records. In 96 career games as a Rider, Goepfert went 52-28-9 with a 2.45 goals against average, a .926 save percentage and nine shutouts. In 2001-02, his final season in Cedar Rapids, Goepfert was named United States Hockey League Player of the Year after going 27-16-5 while turning in a 2.04 goals against average, a .936 save percentage and eight shutouts.

Goepfert was a sixth round choice of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2002 National Hockey League draft and is poised to begin his professional career next season.

Tomorrow night’s game is the first of two the Riders will play in the round robin second round of the USHL’s Clark Cup playoffs. The Riders will close out the East Division round robin Saturday night with a clash with the arch rival Black Hawks in Waterloo. The top two finishers in the round robin will advance to the USHL Final Four. The Riders earned a second round berth by sweeping the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets in four games in round one.

Tickets for tomorrow night’s game can be purchased in person at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office, over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or on line at www.roughridershockey.com. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days. Playoff ticket prices range from $8 to $18 including a 50-cent facility fee.
