The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders’ Kent Patterson, Robin Bergman and Tommy Wingels have all made the final National Hockey League Central Scouting Service rankings of draft eligible players. The Central Scouting rankings were released today.
Patterson, 17, ranks twelfth among North American goaltenders and is the highest rated United States Hockey League netminder. Bergman, an 18-year old forward, ranks one hundred twenty-third among North American-based skaters while Wingels- a 19-year old forward- is the one hundred one hundred sixty-first ranked skater.
A total of 33 players who have seen USHL action this season made the Central Scouting list.
Patterson was named to this season’s USHL All-Rookie Team after posting the league’s second best save percentage (.913) while going 20-5-3 in 29 games. The Plymouth, Minnesota, native finished seventh in the USHL in goals against average (2.91) and tied for seventh in wins. He also notched a pair of shutouts.
Patterson, who joined the RoughRiders after playing for the Blake School last year, set a team record on January 13 by making 58 saves in a 6-5 shootout win over the Sioux City Musketeers.
Bergman (26-17-43) finished the regular season tied for tenth in the USHL in goal scoring. The Notre Dame recruit finished second in the league and set a RoughRider record with 17 power play goals. Bergman scored one goal and totaled five points in the Riders’ four game sweep of the Blue Jackets in the opening round of the Clark Cup playoffs. A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Bergman played for Hammarby IF in his homeland last season.
Wingels scored ten goals and totaled 28 points in 47 regular season games. The Wilmette, Illinois native, scored three goals in the Riders’ first round playoff victory over Ohio. Wingels will play his college hockey at Miami of Ohio. Another first year Rider, Wingels skated for the Team Illinois midget program last season. He was selected by Cedar Rapids in the second round of the September, 2005 USHL Futures Draft with the fifteenth overall pick.
The end-of-season rankings are the second of two comprehensive lists of draft-eligible player ratings released by NHL Central Scouting. The mid-season rankings were released in January. The 2007 NHL Entry Draft will be held June 22 and 23 in Columbus, Ohio.
Nine RoughRiders have been selected in the NHL draft since the team’s arrival in Cedar Rapids in 1999. Calgary Flames forward Dave Moss this season became the first Rider alumnus to reach the NHL. Moss, who was tabbed by Calgary in the seventh round of the 2001 draft, scored ten goals and totaled 18 points in 41 games with the Flames after arriving in Calgary in December.
In the wake of their opening round sweep of the Blue Jackets, the RoughRiders will battle the Indiana Ice and the winner of Waterloo-Chicago first round series in the round robin second round of the Clark Cup playoffs. While second round dates have not yet been finalized, the round robin will start no earlier than next Wednesday. The Riders will play one home game and one away game in round two.
The top two finishers in the East Division round robin will advance to the USHL’s final four. The final four will be played on the home ice of the top remaining seed the weekend of May 11.
