RoughRiders Down Ohio 5-2 to Complete Sweep, Advance to Second Round

The host RoughRiders used third period goals from Brett Dickinson and Robin Bergman to turn back an Ohio Junior Blue Jacket comeback bid and score a 5-2 victory Saturday night to complete a four game sweep of the Blue Jackets in the opening round of the Clark Cup playoffs.

The RoughRiders will open the round robin second round on or just after May 2. The Riders will take on the winners of Waterloo-Chicago and Indiana-Green Bay opening round series in round two. The Riders will face each of the other two round robin qualifiers once. The top two finishers in the round robin will advance to the USHL’s final four.

Saturday night the Blue Jackets rallied to cut what had been a 3-0 Rider lead to 3-2 early in the third period on Clark MacLean’s second straight goal only for Dickinson to reestablish the two goal Rider lead just 41 seconds later. Dickinson charged through the right circle to finish off a 3-on-2 rush and make it 4-2 at 1:32 of the third.

The Riders were on the power play when Bergman capped of the win with a backhander from the doorstep at 9:58 of the final period.

MacLean first sparked Ohio’s comeback hopes by tipping in a power play goal at 10:50 of the second period to trim the Rider edge to 3-1. He narrowed the gap to one just 51 seconds into the third by burying a rebound.

Earlier on it seemed the Riders’ might enjoy a somewhat easier evening.

Doug Jones walked in alone to give the Riders a 1-0 lead with 1:03 left in the first period.

The Riders doubled the advantage just 54 seconds into the second period while shorthandeded. Tommy Wingels charged in alone and shoveled the puck past Ohio goaltender Corson Cramer (22 saves) to double the lead.

The Riders extended the lead to 3-0 at 6:54 of the second on Pat Cannone’s power play goal. Cannone roofed the rebound after Cramer stopped a Mike Seidel bid.
