Danny Dries scored twice and Scott Wietecha scored one goal and added two assists as the host RoughRiders defeated the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets 5-1 Friday night to pull within one win of a four game sweep of the Blue Jackets in the opening round of the Clark Cup playoffs.
Game three was deadlocked at one until Dries buried a Jacob Cepis centering pass for the tie breaking power play goal at 15:16 of the second period.
The Riders were again on the power play- Cedar Rapids would score four of its five goals on the advantage- when Drives tipped in a Scott Wietecha shot to extend the lead to 3-1 at 18:28 of the second.
At 7:55 of the third period Doug Jones scored the only even strength goal of the night with a backhander from the slot.
The Riders were up 5-on-3 when Wietecha scored the Riders’ fourth unanswered goal with a blast from the top of the right wing circle at 12:07 of the third.
The Riders first jumped in front- on the power play, of course- when Mike Seidel darted into the slot to snap a wrist shot past Ohio goaltender Corson Cramer (33 saves) at 8:34 of the first period.
It was the Blue Jackets who were on the power play when Derek Roehl scored the Blue Jackets’ first goal of the series by sweeping a bad angle shot in under Cedar Rapids goaltender Richard Bachman at 10:42 of the second period.
That goal brought to a halt a streak that had seen Bachman go 163:06 (regular season and playoffs combined) without giving up a goal. The Rider netminder would go on to make 22 saves while earning the game three win.
