Waterloo Downs Riders 5-3

Waterloo Downs Riders 5-3

The host Waterloo Black Hawks built a 4-0 lead and went on to defeat the RoughRiders 5-4 Saturday night.

The Black Hawks scored twice in just 52 seconds to jump out to a 2-0 first period lead. Billy Maday battled into the slot and wristed the puck home to make it 1-0 at 14:43. At 15:35 Matt Arhontas buried a Mitch Ryan centering pass.

The Hawks stretched the lead to 3-0 at 16:12 of the second period with the first of three power play goals. Isak Tranvik’s low shot from the slot enabled Waterloo to take a 3-0 lead into the second intermission.

The Hawks were up 5-on-3 when Blake Kessel widened the gap to four goals with a wrist shot just 50 seconds into the third period.

The Riders got on the scoreboard for the first time while on the power play themselves when Mike Seidel tipped in a Pat Cannone with 2:49 gone in the third.

The Hawks made it 5-1 at 5:33 with another goal on the man advantage as Ryan Cramer deposited a rebound from the side of the net.

A pair of goals just 19 seconds apart would give the Riders a late spark. Tyler Thompson jammed the puck in from close range at 14:41 of the third and on the next shift Scott Wietecha fired a Seidel centering pass in to cut gap to 5-3, but Cedar Rapids the Riders would get no closer.
