Andrew Conboy scored with just 22 seconds left in overtime to give the host Omaha Lancers a 5-4 win over the RoughRiders Friday night.
The Riders did earn one point for the sudden death defeat.
Conboy’s drive from the blue line gave the Lancers the win after the Riders had survived an Omaha power play earlier in overtime.
The Riders and Lancers swapped goals- neither team held the lead for longer then one minute and thirteen seconds- over the first two periods before playing out a scoreless third.
Cedar Rapids took a 1-0 lead when Doug Jones’ backhander from the slot sailed past Omaha goaltender Drew Palmisano (27 saves) at 4:12 of the first period.
Just 52 seconds later Matt Thurber snapped the puck home from the right wing circle to even the score at one apiece.
Mark Olver’s shorthanded goal gave the Lancers a 2-1 lead at 10:13 of the first, but a mere 31 seconds after Olver dashed into the goalmouth to beat Rider netminder Kent Patterson (31 saves), the Riders responded with a power play goal. Mike Seidel jammed the puck in from the doorstep to deadlock the game at two.
At 9:48 of the second period the Lancers retook the lead with a power play goal of their own as Nick Petrecki’s blast from the high slot found the back of the net.
It took the RoughRiders all of 73 seconds to rebound and tie score at three. Tyler Thompson jammed the puck into an empty net after Palmisano lost the puck behind the cage.
The Lancers forged ahead for a third time when Petrecki scored Omaha’s second shorthanded goal of the night at 14:48 of the second. Petrecki swooped through the right wing circle and backhanded the puck past Patterson and just inside the post.
The Riders were once more able to produce a quick equalizer while on the power play.
The 4-3 Lancer lead last just 54 seconds before Tommy Wingels pounced on a rebound to even the score yet again.
