Kent Patterson made 45 saves and Tommy Wingels’ second period power play goal stood up as the game winner as the host RoughRiders defeated the Sioux Falls Stampede 4-2 Friday night.
Wingels tipped in a Scott Wietecha blue line blast at 16:47 of the second to break a 2-2 tie.
Patterson turned aside numerous Sioux Falls chances the rest of the way (the Rider netminder made 20 saves in the third period alone) and preserved the one goal lead until Aaron Bogosian’s empty net goal finished off the Stampede with just four seconds left in regulation.
The Riders also started strong, jumping out to a 2-0 first period lead.
Tyler Thompson opened the scoring 6:54 into the game by burying a David Boehm feed from close range.
Danny Dries cut into the goalmouth to double the lead at 14:03 of the first.
The Stampede would get on the scoreboard for the first time just 50 seconds later when Ryan Guentzel fired a loose puck home from the slot.
At 8:22 of the second period Jake Hanson squeezed a shot between Patterson’s pads to even the score at two.
